Remove Debris from Roof and Gutters

It’s important to remove any debris that collects on your roof as well as in your gutters. Debris on your roof can cause algae to begin to grow. If your gutters are full of debris water can accumulate causing water damage on your roof that eventually leaks into your home.

Making sure water is flowing properly and not pooling in areas will help decrease the possibility of water damage, and mold or algae growth. This includes the removal of snow or ice as they can cause damage to your roof as well.

Remove Moss or Mold

If you do have mold or moss growth, removing this will help your roof last longer and look better. You can use a moss or mold remover spray on the area and then brush the mold/moss off of your shingles using a soft brush. Using a power washer is not advised when washing shingles as this could wash away the granules on the shingles causing damage.

Inspect Shingles for Damage or Cracks

If you find cracked or damaged shingles or other areas on the roof it is best to replace these quickly to help prevent any leaks and future water damage. If there is sealant that is damaged or needs to be replaced, doing so will also extend the life of your roof. Inspect Metal Areas and Chimneys

Make sure areas around any metal or chimneys are correctly sealed to prevent water leaking. This may mean replacing roof boots, any caulking, or mortar that may be cracked or damaged. If there is rust on any metal it is best to remove the rust to prevent any further damage.

Look for Signs of Dry Rot

If you do not have proper ventilation on your roof, dry rot can occur. This is not due to water but rather the lack of airflow. This can cause sagging in your roof that will damage not only your shingles but possibly the plywood underneath as well. Having proper ventilation will help maintain your roof and give some protection from dry rot.

Installing a Drip Edge

A drip edge is a roofing component made of metal flashing, projecting outwards to direct the dripping water away, particularly on roof shingles, and secure all underlying building parts. A drip edge should be at least Gauge 36 or heavier, either made of aluminum or galvanized sheets. The installation tools required are tin smiths, a stapler, and a durable hammer.

As a general rule, the lower roof edge should extend at least 3/4 inch beyond the fascia board, so rainwater will run off straight to the gutter. If you make it too short, excess water will drip beyond the gutter, which can possibly cause stained fascia board and rotted roof.

Before you start, prepare the necessary materials including heavy duty staples, roofing nails, ice/water shield, roofing cement, roofing felt and your preferred drip edge material. Here are the steps for installing a drip edge.

  1. Install the roof drip edge in line with your eaves. Install an underlayment (roofing felt or ice/water shield) before fixing the drip edge along the end of the gable roof. Covering the underlayment material with drip edge will keep the rainwater under the roofing shingles from running over the underlayment down to the gutter. The drip edge also secures the roofing felt from getting blown off before installing the shingles.
  2. Make sure to extend the outer edge of the drip edge over the gutter, or you may pull it out slightly from under the roofing shingles.
  3. Use a roofing cement (regardless of brand) to secure the drip edge in place. Apply the roofing cement on top of the drip edge before pressing it down on the roof.
  4. Secure the ends with roofing nails to make sure it can withstand strong winds.

Roof Flashing Installation and Repair

Roof flashing is a critical roofing component that protects the edges, joints, and other seams from heavy drips of rainwater. It provides valuable moisture protection between the building components and roofing surface, securing the gaps effectively.

It’s also critical to install flashing on a firewall, like in the cases of duplex or townhouse units where they share the same wall. You can also install flashing on chimneys, canopies, skylights, aluminum cladding, vents, and other covering applications.

The locations above are susceptible to debris and moisture damage brought by full exposure to sunlight, wind, and other environmental elements. Roof leaks coming from different building joints are inevitable, and flashing repairs are necessary to prevent further damage in your home interiors. Once you encounter a water leak anywhere at home, repair your damaged or defective flashing as soon as possible.

Flashing is strictly required on pivotal areas where two separate roof sections meet or overlap. Your home is at risk of water damage if the flashing is incorrectly installed. Repairing the roof flashing can save you thousands of dollars while protecting your possessions at home.

Roof flashing should be installed professionally since you won’t notice the water damage until it becomes visible. Otherwise, you will encounter the following problems:

 

1. Roof Truss Damages

Since roof trusses are prone to rust and corrosion, they should be secured from water leaks and other potential damages from broken roof tiles.

2. Mold Formation

A small amount of moisture can escalate the process of mold growth anywhere from roof trusses down to the ceiling. Maintain a regular inspection at least every three months to prevent the worse scenario where you need to replace the entire section of the ceiling.

3. Random Roof Leaks

Water will always find its way out, so you need to inspect your roof flashing regularly. Roof flashing will be the first to fail before the roofing material due to the presence of accumulated water and debris.
